In the early 1900s men used compressedair machines in mines to cut coal from the rock. They also used explosives to blast the rocks. The coal was loaded into railway wagons and taken out.

Although mining companies make strong efforts to limit environmental fallout, disasters happen and can be very serious. The Tui mine on Mt Te Aroha is an unfortunate example of the possible environmental disaster which can come from mining efforts. This was the past site of the Norpac mine, arguably the most toxic area in New Zealand.
