The second largest gold nugget ever found was the Welcome Nugget ( kg), that was discovered by a group of twentytwo Cornish miners at the Red Hill Mining Company site at Bakery Hill in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, on June 9, 1858.

Victoria is a worldrenowned gold province and our history is closely connected to gold mining. Gold discovery at Ballarat in 1851 sparked Victoria''s famous gold rush. An estimated 6000 diggers (miners) arrived each week seeking their fortune. Ballarat was considered the world''s richest alluvial goldfield during its peak between 1852 and 1853.

Problems associated with tracing gold miners: Gold miners of the 1850s are difficult to trace through records in the Central Highlands region of Victoria. Early mining was alluvial and as soon as one field was exhausted, the rush was on to another. The miners were itinerant often alternating gold seeking with labouring or farming work.

There are four key zones for exploration at Ballarat Gold Mine with eight Exploration Licences, all in the Bendigo Zone in Central Victoria, which has historical production of over 60 Moz gold. Sep 20, 2019· The gold processing plant was constructed in 2005 and was purposely designed to suit the coarse grained nuggetty Ballarat ore with the aim of capturing gold and sulphides at the point of liberation without overgrinding. The gold and sulphide minerals are separated away from the waste using the difference in density.

Underground mining and ore processing at Ballarat was restarted in 2011, and the first gold pour under a new management team was achieved in September that same year.
